Jesus Makes Us Traitors
October 17, 2024
Jesus’ invitation to believe in him and follow him (to be a Christian) is all inclusive. It is for every human on earth. It does not discriminate. So why did Jesus say that few will accept the invitation?
One of the reasons few people accept Jesus’ invitation is that it makes us traitors.
Jesus’ said, repent and follow me. (Mark 1:15-17) A prerequisite to following Jesus is repentance.
Repentance from the point of view of our old beliefs and lifestyles is betrayal. And many people cant or wont betray their current way of thinking and living, not even for Jesus.
Some people want to be a Christian while remaining loyal to their old self, old identities, and old beliefs. But it is impossible.
Jesus said, Repent, and follow me. Without repentance, it is impossible to truly follow Jesus, and be loyal to him alone.
Until we are willing to become a traitor to the things Jesus calls us to leave behind, we cannot follow him.
The good news is that when we are willing to repent and follow Jesus, he restores us, gives us a new identity in Christ, and makes us into a new creation.
